One
of the greatest feelings of a person is to love. God is love, and He designed
it for us to give it back and to love other people. The Bible says, “Jesus replied: "'Love (Agape) the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul
and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment and the
second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:37-39 NIV). The
verses review the greatest revelation in the Bible: the love that God gave us. God
expects that we return the love He has for us to Him, but it is impossible in
fullness because we are not perfect and we are sinners. The best way to show Agape
love is to define it as a form of love, which is shown to us through Christ as
an unconditional love.
Agape love is a
sacrificial love. The Bible says, "For God so loved the world that he gave
his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have
eternal life” (John 3:16 NIV). God Himself came to this world as a man to die for
humankind. This is the greatest form of love not the one that expects anything
back, but a pure love that exceeds every kind of thought because it is beyond
our comprehension.
People get confused with the term agape
because they do not know the real meaning expressed by the word itself. They
are misinformed because there are three kinds of love: Agape is one, Eros is
other and Philos is the last one. In addition to Agape love, Eros love is the
love that a woman feels for a man or a man for a woman. The Philos love is the
love people feel for friends, parents, brothers and sisters. People are
confused especially by Philos love as being the Agape love, because God said to
us to love one another. Some people think that this is Agape love, but it is
not because Agape love is God’s love for us. It is written that the Philos love
that makes people love one another.
The Agape love,
according to the free dictionary by Farlex, is defined as, “Christianity Love as revealed in Jesus, seen as
spiritual and selfless and a model for humanity.” It is the concept of loving
like Jesus loved and loves us. The agape love is more than words could ever
express. It is a concept of style of life, a model for humanity. The model for
the humanity is impossible to imitate, but we as people can look like it as
much as we can, not physically but spiritually. The way we can become closer to
the model is through the Holy Spirit.
I
had an exceptional experience with the Holy Spirit and His love. One day when I
was at a camp organized by the church, I used to attend; I felt something
different on a service that it happened. I felt the presence of God as I never
felt before. I felt His power invading my whole life. I felt a different kind
of love being poured out on my life. It was incredible to see the love God has
for me in a simple experience, but an involving experience, which impacted my
life. I felt God’s presence embracing me, and I also heard a voice saying to me
that my life will never be the same. That day God released His Holy Spirit into
my life.
This Holy Spirit is God’s Spirit that
lives inside of our hearts at the time we accept Jesus into our lives. God’s
Spirit is Agape and His love is unending. The good news is that this unending
love of God lives inside of us, people who accepted Christ into our lives. The
Holy Spirit carries this unconditional love, the Agape love. We have this love
inside of us but it is not our own as body and soul, it is the Holy Spirit’s
love. The only way we can reach the Agape love is through the Holy Spirit. The
Agape love flow inside of us in a certain way, and it is not as much as it
should be flowing because of sin. Our mortal body will never support the
fullness of Agape love only because of sin.
Jesus
could show His Agape love towards the humanity because he did not have any kind
of sin. He is the Son of God that came to this world to show us how much God
loves us. Even with our small mentality, we will never understand His love for
us, and we know that His love is gigantic because of the sacrifice was made through
Jesus. Not only the sacrifice, but everything He did for people when He was on
earth; healing, operating in miracles, casting out demons, and setting a new
period for humanity. A period where not just Jewish people could come to the
presence of God, but other people groups too. Now everybody can feel God’s
presence and get involved with Him. It came a time where a new commandment was
established in the world, it was not a time of judgment anymore, but a time of
mercy through His love.
Agape love brings trust. God trusted us to
make what we are supposed to do in this world. “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing
them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and
teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you
always, to the very end of the age” (Matthew 28:19-20 NIV). God through His
love gave us a commandment, and this commandment is to make disciples of all
nations. God’s love for us brought security and trustworthiness towards us
human beings even when we are traitors He loves us. Agape love is all about
this; it is more than the term itself that comes from the Greek word that means
love as words in the Greek alphabet, but a feeling that it is indescribable. Agape
love is a love that never fails, is the cross, is unending, is sacrificial, and
it is all about Jesus.
Love you my Savior!
